About the Role
As a Senior Engineering Manager at Uber, you will lead, mentor, and manage high-performing software engineering teams responsible for the full lifecycle of mission-critical systems within our global Insurance Engineering organization. This role demands ability to set strategic technical direction, hands-on leadership, and a relentless focus on delivering scalable and reliable solutions that support Uber’s complex insurance needs across billions of dollars in annual claims.
You’ll empower your teams to apply the principles of software engineering and reliability to solve deeply complex system challenges, while managing organizational expectations and making thoughtful tradeoffs in ambiguous environments. Your influence will extend across multiple disciplines, including Product, Data Science, Actuarial, and Legal, to deliver next-generation InsureTech products that have a direct impact on our customers’ safety and Uber’s bottom line.
You will set and communicate clear goals and metrics, ensure effective execution through actionable planning and structured delegation, and foster a culture of technical excellence and trust across teams. This includes hiring, performance management, and career development for both individual contributors and engineering managers under your leadership.
The systems you and your teams build will leverage cutting-edge technologies, ranging from graph databases and GenAI-powered workflows to telematics and dashcam video analysis, to enable real-time crash detection, claims automation, and seamless integration with external insurance carriers. Your leadership will be instrumental in pushing the boundaries of InsureTech innovation and delivering transformative solutions that elevate operational efficiency and user experience at global scale.
What You'll Do
- Lead and Inspire: Play a manager of managers role and manage a diverse team of frontend and backend engineers, building microservices and full-stack web applications.
- Own the Roadmap: Partner with Product Management to define, prioritize, and deliver on product goals.
- Set Technical Direction: Develop a scalable, maintainable technical strategy and provide architectural guidance.
- Elevate the Team: Drive continuous improvement in processes, mentor engineers and leaders, and foster a culture of collaboration and learning.
- Empower Growth: Support individual career development through constructive feedback, clear objectives, and guidance.
Basic Qualifications
- Technical Depth: Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or related field AND 5+ years full-time Software Engineering work experience prior to Engineering Management experience
- Vision and Execution: Demonstrated ability to set and communicate a compelling vision while ensuring timely and responsible product delivery.
- Action-Oriented: Comfortable moving quickly and thoughtfully, striking a balance between speed and quality.
- Mentorship Skills: Adept at teaching, reviewing code, and guiding team members toward sound technical decisions.
- Passion for Impact: Enthusiastic about ownership, innovation, and turning challenges into opportunities to grow.
- Team Player: Promotes a collaborative culture, values candid feedback, and invests in others’ success.
- Insurance Experience (Preferred): Familiarity with insurance processes or products is a plus.
Preferred Qualifications
- Proven Leadership: 5+ years of software engineering management experience, with a track record of recruiting and developing high-performing teams.
- Insurance Domain Expertise: Proven experience building innovative technology solutions in the insurance space, particularly in claims handling, fraud detection, and operational efficiency.
- Strategic Business Acumen: Strong ability to partner with Product Managers and business stakeholders, challenging assumptions and aligning engineering initiatives with business goals.
- Execution in Ambiguity: Demonstrated success in delivering impactful results in fast-paced, rapidly evolving, and ambiguous environments.
- Communication & Analytical Skills: Exceptional ability to translate complex technical decisions into clear business value, supported by strong analytical thinking and storytelling.
For San Francisco, CA-based roles: The base salary range for this role is USD$257,000 per year - USD$285,500 per year.
For Sunnyvale, CA-based roles: The base salary range for this role is USD$257,000 per year - USD$285,500 per year.
